Women’s anger perspective is finally changing thanks to pop culture

Over time, women have suppresed their feelings thanks to the “what would they say?” argument. Even though it has been worked over the years, it wasn’t uptil now that it is finally being “acceptable” to get mad over things.

On our lastest blog (which I invite you to read if you haven’t), our co-founder Pia Baca stated her experience in an academic event where the dress code was fitted to “not distract” men while the only thing they made it to abstent women to dress comfortably.

Good girl stereotype

The author and co-host of the Women are Mad podcast the psychotherapist Jennifer Cox is makng a research after suspecting that her female clients suppression of it was root cause of some of their physical conditions.

“There was this pattern of women coming in with migraines, stomach issues, musculoskeletal and immune issues. Ultimately it was hard to ignore,” she says.

“They were trying to keep their kids on track, look after their mental health and somehow do their job [too].” Cox later did group sessions where many women stated their expereince.

“We’ve been brought up with this ridiculous ‘good girl’ stuff… indoctrinated in this idea of being good, polite, kind, thoughtful, caring,” she says.

“The big change from previous generations is that we are expected to do it all.”

She advocates for mindfulness as it helps to recognise the emotion and allowing yourself to experience it. Remember to hear it if you want to work in “Making Feelings Fashionable”.

Cultural Switch

On previouse years, the increse on more positive representations of angry women in media has changed according to Cox, plus that the depictions are more helpful and healthy.

For example takes Lily Allen’s 2025 album West End Girl which recorded the endo of her marrige with the actor David Harbour, along with artist such as Charli XCX with her “brat” album released in summer 2024, Olivia Rodrigo with songs such as “serena joy”, Chappell Roan releasing music like “Femininomenon” from her album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” released in 2023, and Taylor Swift with the track “The Man” from the “Lover” album from 2019.

On the world of the movies, the 2023 box office delivered the “Barbie” movie where the iconic doll started living real feelings in ger picture-perfect world.

On the other hand, everyday sexism presents ongoing threats including stalking, harassment, and domestic abuse as powerful factors uniting women in anger and defiance. Violence against women and girls have reported nearly 20% out of all recorded crime in England and Wales, even though most go unreported.

The maltese music artist Chess Galea explains how she used to suppress any feelings of anger fearing that she would be named as “hysterical” or “difficult to work with” by the press or fans. She says that “we don’t realise hpw much we accept and how much we close our mounths” to the mental load women carry to sexism.

She discusses this thanks to her experience of misogyny in the music industry as well as being victime of sexual assault. “I think we’ve been angry for a long time but now we can access others because of social media” she says as she sees that women are now more open about their negative emotions than before.

Personally, I thank that this new generation is more open to argue about the mental load women carry because of the sexism that exist in the world. Not to mention to all of the women that demosntrates that we are as capable as men in many areas. I like sports and genuinely I just love how women like Billie Jean King, Cathy Freeman, Serena Williams, Doriane Pin, and many more demonstrate it in their respective sports.

I may not deal with the same problems as others but I can tell you that if you build your safe place no matter where it is, if its either at school/work or at home or anywhere and you are with the people you love and take care of you, you are were you need to be. Erase anyone that isn’t your type of person and welcome the ones that have a good impact.

I can say that the friends I have right now are the ones I need to this day. Even in the most exhausting days that are in my life, they’ll get a smile on my face.

Also, I have my brother. Maybe for my family it doesn’t seem that we do really get along but he always makes my day better even if the only thing he says is pure nonsense. We are able to bond and I’m so thank full I’m his eldest sister because he has the confidence to ask me things knowing I’ll say the reality of it.
